When people think about sitting at home and writing a website of their own, they are often scared by the prospect of trying to compete with much larger, more established websites.
I’ll be writing a series of posts on this, because it’s an important topic.
Here is reason #1: You can beat big media because the online audience is more interested in hearing from you than it is in hearing from then.
Let me paint a picture to illustrate this point.
In the glory days of big, traditional media, we were all facing in their direction.
We looked at our TVs, we read newspapers and magazines, and we listened to radios. Big media had all of our attention when it came to news, information and entertainment.
Not any more.
Today one billion web users worldwide are spending a lot less time facing big media, and a lot more time facing one another.
We now have choices. And most of us choose to interact with each other. The proof of that lies in the extraordinary growth of social media sites like Facebook and Twitter. The second half of the proof lies in the decline and struggles of traditional media. They are losing our attention.
So if you write a quality website of your own, you can use social media, as well as forums, blogs and emails, to reach an audience of readers who are very open to checking out what you have to share. They no longer feel that they should face big media, and they prefer learning from regular people who share their own interests and passions.
