Monday Copywriting Tip #58: Find Your Freelance Niche

If you work as a freelancer, the best advice I can give is to find and develop a profitable niche you can call your own.

Become known as an expert in one particular area.

Your can choose your niche by medium or by industry, or a combination of the two.

For instance, you can become the expert in e-newsletters for the insurance industry. Or direct mail in the fundraising industry. Or web page copy in the “home and garden” industry. Or white papers in the consumer electronics industry.

When you stick to a niche, instead of writing a little of everything, you put yourself in a position where you can become known and recognized as a true expert in that field.

And you will become a true expert. After a while, working in one narrow field, you will come to know a great deal about it. You will know more than other copywriters, and more than most of your clients. Deep knowledge within a particular field makes you very valuable.

How do you choose a niche?

For that, I have two pieces of advice.

First, choose an industry and medium that truly interests you. Do that and you will enjoy your work life a great deal more than if you choose an area that seems “hot”, but which doesn’t really interest you personally.

Second, find a niche that is profitable. In other words, don’t confine yourself to a freelance career during which you are working too many hours for too little money.

Is it easy to identify an interesting niche that is also profitable? Not always. But it’s worth putting in the effort to find it.
