More on Being Personal

My apologies for the lack of entries recently. I have been busy. I have been traveling. I have been as sick as a dog.

And now I'm back.

The most recent issue of my newsletter is now online, including an article on the subject of being 'personal' in your writing style. Hint: You're not my buddy.

Monday Copywriting Tip #16: Be Flexible in Your Tone

When you write for the web, you need to adjust your tone, according to the circumstances. You use the same voice - the voice of your company, organization or yourself. But the tone should change according to your purpose. A formal announcement should be written formally. A customer service email should be written in a friendlier, but not casual tone. The launch of an exciting new product should carry that sense of excitement in your tone of voice.

To change your voice rings false, and is usually manipulative. To change the tone of your voice is simply human.

How AOL Filters Your Email 'From' Line

Just saw this in today's issue of Ezine-Tips. Important to know:

--

Email Newsletter *FROM* Field Secret
By Christopher Knight

Today's Ezine-Tips is short and sweet. It comes courtesy of Carl
Hutzler (Director of Anti-Spam Operations AOL). Hutzler indicated
that an important distinction is that AOL strips the non email
text data before they deliver your emails to AOL members.

Example:

This was the old Ezine-Tips FROM: field before today's article:

"Ezine-Tips"

What Hutzler is saying is that AOL strips out the stuff BEFORE
the email address...in our case, AOL strips out "Ezine-Tips" and when AOL members get this newsletter, they would only see "newsletter@emailuniverse.com" as the FROM: field. Make sense?

Monday Copywriting Tip #15: Keep your Homepage Current

For those who come to your site on a regular basis, there is something a little unsettling about finding the exact same homepage text on every visit. When nothing changes from visit to visit, people may get the impression that 'nobody is home'. If you can, find some element that you can update on a regular basis. Give some indication that your site is current, alive, evolving.
